School Terms & Parental Consent
Effective 2026-06-05
This addendum applies when Shadowinis used in a school, classroom, or other educational setting (a “School Account”). It sits on top of our main Terms of Service and Privacy Policy — where this addendum is more protective of students, this addendum controls.
Teacher-led
A teacher or school administrator sets up and supervises student access.
Consent-first
Students under the age of digital consent need verifiable parental consent before practising.
Data-minimized
We collect only what's needed to run pronunciation practice — never more for students.
1. Who this covers
A School Account is any account a school flags for classroom use. The school or teacher (the “Educational Institution”) acts as the point of contact and is responsible for obtaining any consents required by local law before inviting students.
2. Parental consent for minors
Where a student is below the age of digital consent in their jurisdiction (for example, 13 under COPPA in the United States, or 13–16 under UK/EU GDPR depending on the country), the Educational Institution must obtain verifiable parental or guardian consent before that student creates an account or submits any voice recording.
By enabling a School Account and inviting students, the Educational Institution confirms it has either obtained that consent or is relying on a lawful basis under applicable education-data law (such as the “school official” exception under FERPA where applicable). We can provide a parental-consent template on request at privacy@shadowin.xyz.
3. What we collect for student accounts
For School Accounts we practise data minimization: an email or a school-issued identifier for sign-in, pronunciation recordings the student submits, and practice-progress metrics (scores, streaks, time practised). We do not require a real name and recommend schools use class aliases where possible.
We do not show behavioural advertising to students, we do not sell student data, and we do not use student User Content to train AI models for third parties. Voice recordings are transmitted to our AI subprocessor (currently OpenAI) solely to generate the pronunciation score the student requested.
4. Access, correction, and deletion
A parent, guardian, or the school may request access to, correction of, or deletion of a student's data at any time by emailing privacy@shadowin.xyz. When a school closes a class or a student leaves, the school may request bulk deletion of the associated accounts and recordings.
5. Acceptable use in the classroom
Students may submit recordings only of their own voice. Teachers are responsible for supervising use, ensuring students do not submit other people's voices without consent, and that practice content is age-appropriate. All other rules in the main Terms of Service continue to apply.
